ATS is mostly a structure problem
People talk about ATS as if it is a mysterious gatekeeper, but most of the time it is checking for understandable structure, role-relevant language, and clear formatting.
What usually helps
- standard section names
- role-specific keywords used naturally
- consistent dates and job titles
- readable bullet points with direct action verbs
What usually hurts
Keyword stuffing, tables that break parsing, and vague summaries are still common problems. A resume can look polished to a person and still be hard for software to read.
The best strategy is to write for both audiences at the same time: clean enough for systems, strong enough for people.
